Process for obtaining lactone compounds, containing a lactone ring bearing at least two groups, at least one of which is a phosphorus acid residue comprising a phosphorus atom carrying an alkyl, alkoxy, alkylmercapto group, cycloalkyl, cycloalkoxy, cycloalkylmercapto, alkylamino, or dialkylamino, and an oxygen or sulfur atom, said phosphorus acid residue being linked through an amido group or a sulfur atom, to a carbon atom of the lactone ring, other than the carbon atom that occupies the β position in the ring, characterized in that it comprises reacting a lactone, with a halogen atom linked to a carbon atom of the lactone ring other than the carbon atom occupying the β position in the ring, with a phosphorus acid or a phosphorus acid amide, under conditions such that the hydrogen halide formed in the reaction is removed.
