Abstract

In a high-pressure pump or compressor the part 4 of the piston carrying the piston rings 8 is either wholly separated from the main part 12 of the piston or connected therewith by means, e.g. an enlarged abutment on one fitting loosely fitted in a slot in the other, permitting relative lateral movement and/or misalignment between the two parts. The piston ring assembly is clamped between guide bushes 5 and 6 which may be of cast iron and the part 12 has an end compression pad 13 which may be of beryllium copper.
