Abstract
Polyester resins are prepared by heating together as sole reactants a dicarboxylic acid, a glycol, and an epoxide-ended reaction product of epichlorhydrin or dichlorhydrin and a polyhydric phenol which amounts to 0.1 to 10 weight per cent of the total polyester forming material. The acid and glycol usually amount to 20-70 weight per cent each of the total the product preferably has a hydroxyl value of 30-500 mg KOH/gm. and a viscosity of 20-400 poises. Suitable dicarboxylic acids include adipic (preferred), succinic, glutaric, azelaic, sebacic, maleic, fumaric, phthalic, isophthalic, terephthalic, hydrogenated phthalic and diglycollic acid or mixtures of these. Suitable glycols include ethylene, propylene, tri-, tetra-, penta- and hexamethylene and neopentyl glycols, 1:2-, 1:3- and 2:3-butylene glycols, 1:2-, 1:3- and 1:4-cyclohexane diols, and di-, tri- and poly-ethylene and -propylene glycols and polystyrene oxide. Suitable phenols include resorcinol, phloroglucinol, 4:41-dihidroxydiphenyl, 4:41 - dihydroxydiphenyl - sulphone, -ether, or -propane, 3:5:31:51-tetrabromo - 4:41 - dihydroxydiphenylpropane and phenol/aldehyde or phenol/ketone condensates. In Examples adipic acid and diethylene glycol are condensed with condensates of epichlorhydrin (or dichlorhydrin) with bisphenol A containing 1, 3 or 8 residues of the bisphenol. Uses:-polyols for polyurethane foam preparation, hydraulic fluids, plasticizers.
