Abstract
A motor-vehicle universal joint comprises an intermediate block 9 pivoted on a shaft 7 on trunnions 8 and needle bearing assemblies 11, 12, formed respectively on the shaft 7 and housed in the block 9, or vice-versa, at rightangles to which the block 9 has trunnions 13 pivoted in needle bearings 15 in cylindrical, or part-spherical, rollers 14 which engage and roll in guide slots (6) (Fig. 2, not shown) in an outer housing member 1 to accommodate " plunge " of the joint, the trunnions 13 being kept perpendicular to the axis of the outer member 1 by part-cylindrical blocks 16 freely located on bearing surfaces 20 of the block 9 and slidably engaging the side walls 17 adjacent the guide slots 6 in the outer member 1, or, in Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) pair of guide blocks (37) surrounding and spaced from rollers (35), engage the side wall of the outer member (25) in the guide slots (27), each block (37) having an inwardly projecting portion (38) formed with a tapered bore (39) which engages a complementary surface (40) on the block (30). The guide slots may be formed part-way (Fig. 3) or, completely through (Fig. 1), the side walls of the outer member, and may have plane parallel or part-cylindrical side walls engaged respectively by the cylindrical or part-spherical rollers of the intermediate block. The outer housing member 1 is closed by a boot (22) (Fig. 2).
