Abstract

A process for preparing shaped articles, in particular fibers, filaments, films and the like, composed essentially of a segmented copolymer having an essentially linear structure and being a segmented urea/urethane/HOPOH copolymer, in which P represents the polymeric residue of a low melt hydroxyl terminated polymer chosen from the group consisting of polyethers, polyesters, poly- (ester-ethers), and related urethane linkage oligomers, segmented copolymer having a polymer melting temperature above 150º C and an inherent viscosity of at least 3.0 when dissolved in 60% phenol and 40% tetrachloroethane, which comprises molding, while in the molten state, a copolymer consisting essentially of a number of urea segments containing at least one repeating unit a fiber-forming polyurea, repeating unit having the formula: -A-NH-CO-NH-D-NH-CO-NH- wherein -A- is the bivalent organic radical of a functionally aliphatic diisocyanate having the formula: NH2-D-NH2 polyurea, as a fiber-independent forming polymer, has a melting point of at least 200º C on the fiber-forming molecular weight scale of about 10,000 and essentially all the segments of said urea are connected to said polymeric waste by urethane linkages of the formula: -NH-CO-O- where -NH- of said urethane bond is adhered to the terminal radical -A- of said segment of urea and -CO- of said urethane bond is adhered to the terminal atom -O- of said polymeric residues, polymeric residues which are the radicals that they remain after the removal of the terminal hydroxyl groups of a polymer consisting essentially of a member selected from the group consisting of (1) a hydroxyl-terminated linear series of divalent hydrocarbon groups to which at least one member chosen from the group consisting of intra-linear links of oxy and carboxy, and (2) oligomers of said series to which has been attached one to ten intra-linear bonds -CO-NH-A-NH-CO-, in which A as defined above, polymer having a melting point of less than 60º C and a molecular weight on the scale of 600 to about 12,000, urea segments constituting (a) as 2% to about 9% by weight of said copolymer when said d Iamine is unobstructed, and (b) from about 5 to 25% when said diamine is obstructed.
