Abstract

A process for the preparation of an elastic fiber in which at least 85% by weight of the fiber-forming polymeric material is a segmented long-chain polyurethane, where the polymer molecules consist essentially of 50 to 95% by weight of segments soft newspapers and 3 to 5% by weight of periodic hard segments, said soft and hard segments being bonded together through urethane junctions, said soft segments being the remainder that remains after separating from the terminal functional groups of a amorphous polymer with a melting point of less than 60º C. and a molecular weight of more than 600, the said hard segments consisting of the rest of the polymeric molecules remaining between the urethane linkages and containing at least one repeat unit of a nitrogenous polymer which in the fiber-forming molecular weight range has a melting point above about 200º C; with the improvement that at least 12% by weight of the total hard segments in said polymeric molecules are divalent radicals of formula: ** (See formula) ** where said divalent radicals are all linked to NH groups; R "is a lower alkyl radical selected from the group consisting of methyl, ethyl, and n-propyl; X is a radical selected from the group consisting of (a) p-phenyl (b) p-xilileno (c) 1,4-cicloexileno (d) 4,4'-bifenileno (e) 1,4-naphthylene (f) 1,5-naftileno (g) 2,6-naftileno (h) (see formula) where -Y- is selected from the class consisting of ** (See formula) ** (i) radicals as defined in (b), (d), (e), (f), (g) and (h) hydrogenated in the ring, and (j) Radicals as defined in (a), (b), (c), (d), (e), (f), (g), (h) and (i) that they have substituted in the ring by at least one substituent of the class consisting of methyl, methoxy and ethyl; said process being characterized by spinning filaments of a segmented polymer prepared by reacting a polymer with a molecular weight between 600 and 5,000 and a molar excess of a polyisocyanate and by extending the chain of the isocyanate-terminated polymer with a chain extender containing more than one active hydrogen atom, the polyisocyanate and/or chain extender containing, at least in part, one or more hindered tertiary compounds selected from the hindered tertiary diisocyanates of the formula: ** (See formula) ** and hindered tertiary diamines.
