Abstract

Formaldehyde containing more than 0.5% of water is polymerized with a liquid inert medium having dissolved therein an organic titanium catalyst. The catalyst may be, amongst many others, titanium oleate, stearate or phenolate or tetrabutyl titanate while the inert medium may be heptene, toluene, acetone, tetrahydrofuran or methylene chloride. The formaldehyde starting material preferably contains 1 to 7% water or more preferably 1.5 to 5% water. The polymerization may take place at - 40 DEG to +60 DEG C., and the reactants may be supplied continuously or intermittently, as may also be the case for the polymerization. The products may be esterified or etherified to block the end groups. Up to 10% of comonomers, e.g. isobutene, dioxolone, vinyl ethers, vinyl-nitrogen compounds, cyclic ethers, aldehydes and ketones may also be present.
