Improvements related to the preparation of a reinforced glass article, comprising a central portion composed of a first alkali metal silicate glass in which the main alkaline metal ion has an ion radius greater than that of lithium, and a surrounding surface layer composed of a second alkali metal silicate glass, structurally different from the first glass, but having a basic composition corresponding, on a molar basis, to that of the first glass, except for a lower content of the first main alkali metal ion and a content correspondingly greater than a minor alkali metal ion (such as lithium) by virtue of which the total alkali metal ion content of each glass is essentially the same, the article being characterized by the fact that at least a portion of the lower alkali metal ion of the surrounding surface layer is replaced by a relavant monovalent metal ion large, without change in the structure of the glass, whereby the surface layer of the glass article is compressively forced and the strength or solidity of the article is increased.
