Abstract

A plastics crate for bottles has its base 14 formed with downwardly-extending ribs in closed formations to make stacking projections 46, 48, 50, 52 which can be engaged with the upper rim 22 of a like crate when stacked upon it, the ribs of the projections conforming to a ribbed lattice (36, 38), Fig. 1 (not shown), which constitutes the base. The projections 46 &c., Fig. 2, are so arranged that the crates may be stacked in aligned or crossed formation. Transverse walls 16, 18 separate the crate into compartments, the lower sections 44 of the walls being omitted and coinciding with rings (40), Fig. 1 (not shown), in the lattice of the base 14 to form holes through which broken glass &c. can pass when cleaning the crate. The projections 46 at the corners of the crate are provided with sockets (54) to receive rubber studs (58), Fig. 6 (not shown), which act as feet for the crate. Hand holes 24 are provided in the end walls of the crate. Vertical reinforcing ribs 30, 32 &c. are formed along the outsides of the crate, and internal reinforcing buttresses may also be provided. The reinforcing ribs 30 &c. are integral with an outwardly directed lip 20 having a lower surface which engages on the upper rim 22 around the top of the like crate below, when stacked upon it, to take the weight of the crate. In a modification. Fig. 3 (not shown), the stacking projections (70) are formed over parts of their lengths as continuations of a rib (68) extending right around the edge of the crate base 14 smooth passage of a loaded crate along a roller conveyer is thus obtained. Stacking projections (72), Fig. 4 (not shown), are then provided on the top surface of the upper rim 22 for engagement by the continuous base rib (68) of a like crate above. Alternatively, recesses may be formed in the upper rim 22 for the same purpose. To facilitate stacking of the crates upon their sides, sockets (74), Fig. 5 (not shown), are formed at rib junctions around the outer sides of the crate walls, to receive rubber studs (58), Fig. 6 (not shown). The studs (58) on one crate then engage in the sockets (74), Fig. 5 (not shown), in the adjacent crate. Alternatively, if it is desired to stack the crates on their sides out of alignment, three or more sets of slots (76), Fig. 7 (not shown), may be provided adjacent each end of the hand holes 24. One of the sets of slots is provided with a resilient pad for engagement in the slots of the adjacent crate. The side walls of the crate may be formed with windows.
