Abstract

Compositions suitable for water-proofing or decorating building materials which may contain free lime comprise (a) 100 parts by weight of a film-forming copolymer of an acrylic or methacrylic ester with another such ester or a copolymer of such an ester with styrene (b) 0.5 - 12.5 parts by weight of a dispersion agent selected from sodium methylene-bisnaphthalene sulphonate, condensates of 8 - 14 mols ethylene oxide with 1 mol -naphthol, condensates of 2 - 8 mols ethylene oxide with 1 mol stearic or palmitic acid, condensates of 4 - 10 mols ethylene oxide with 1 mol cetyl, lauryl or oleyl alcohol, and fatty acid amides or alkylamines having 12 - 18 carbon atoms (c) 0.5 - 12.5 parts by weight of a water-proofing agent selected from fatty acid amides or alkylamines having 12 - 18 carbon atoms, fatty acid - alkylene oxide condensates having 2 - 8 alkylene oxide units, *-acylamino-butyric acids having 12 - 18 carbon atoms in the acyl radical, butyl, ammonium or amine stearates or oleates, dialkyl ketones having 7 - 18 carbon atoms in each alkyl group, or a wax or 0.5 - 40 parts by weight of a microcrystalline wax (d) 150 - 250 parts by weight of an aqueous or organic solvent (e) 0 - 200 parts by weight of a pigment and/or inorganic filler (f) 0 - 1.5 parts by weight of an anti-foaming agent and (g) 0 - 10 parts by weight of a coalescing agent. The consistency of the composition may be adjusted, if desired, by the addition of a further quantity of solvent. The (meth) acrylic ester components) of the copolymers may be derived from an aliphatic, araliphatic or cycloaliphatic alcohol. Where component (c) of the composition is a wax, this may be polyethylene wax, ceresin or a paraffin wax. Suitable organic solvents (d) include aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons, and aliphatic esters, alcohols and ketones. Components (e) specified are red or black iron oxide, titanium dioxide, burnt sienna, ochre, green chromium, oxide, gypsum, magnesium silicate, magnesium carbonate, calcium carbonate, pyrophyllite, mica, pumice, silica, diatomite, barium sulphate and alumina. The anti-foam (f) may be tributyl phosphate or 2-ethyl hexanol, and the coalescing agent may be ethylene glycol monoethyl ether acetate, diethylene glycol monobutyl ether acetate or hexylene glycol. The compositions are particularly suitable for application to asbestoscement agglomerates in the form of plane or corrugated boards, wall boards, tiles &c. The compositions can be applied by means of a spray gun, scraper or brush, or by the curtain painting method. In a preferred procedure, the substrate material is preheated to 40 - 60 C. and then coated, the coated material left to stand for 0.5 - 1 minute, and then dried in an oven at 40 - 60 C for 2 - 10 minutes. The weight of dry film coating may be from 30 - 85 g. per sq. m.
