Abstract

A process for the preparation of 1,2-opoxysteroids of the formula I ** (See formula) ** wherein B is an additional unsaturation between positions 6 and 7; n is an integer value of 0 to 1; R is R1 is hydrogen or a substituent containing from 1 to 10 carbon atoms, chosen from the group consisting of alkyl, alkanoyl, ar-alkanoyl or aroyl; X is hydrogen, halogen, hydroxyl or a substituent containing 1 to 10 carbon atoms, chosen from the group consisting of alkanoyloxy, ar-alkanoyloxy or aroyloxy; Y is hydrogen hydroxyl or a substituent containing from 1 to 10 carbon atoms, chosen from the group consisting of alkoxy, alkanoyloxy, ar-alkanoyloxy and aroyloxy; and Z is hydrogen, lower alkyl, lower alkenyl or lower alkynyl, characterized in that it consists of treating a compound of the formula II ** (See formula) ** where R, B and n have the same meaning as before, with an epoxidation agent, in order to carry out the selective opoxidation of the double bond 1 (2), and, if desired, to hydrogenate the double bond 6 (7) in a compound obtained in which n is 1.
