Process for the preparation of trialkylamines characterized in that it comprises preparing a reaction mixture containing an alkyl bromide, whose alkyl bromide is composed mostly of linear straight chain alkyl bromides and in a smaller proportion of branched chain primary alkyl and straight chain secondary alkyl bromides wherein the alkyl group of said alkyl bromides contains from 10 to 20 carbon atoms; and a dialkylamine and water solution, comprising a dialkylamine in which the alkyl groups contain from about 1 to about 3 carbon atoms; said dialkylamine solution and water containing from 5% to 20% water, by weight; the molar ratio of said alkylamine with respect to said alkyl bromide in said reaction mixture being greater than about 8: 1; reacting said alkyl bromide with said dialkylamine for 2 to 7 minutes at a temperature of the order of 37.6º C to 87.7º C and under a pressure sufficient to maintain said alkylamine in the liquid state in order to form a reaction product ; and then heating said reaction product to a reaction temperature of the order of 135.0º C to 190.5º C for 4.5 to 12 minutes and under a pressure sufficient to maintain the dialkylamine in the liquid state.
