Abstract
A first metal 5 is extruded through a die 29 by hydrostatic pressure applied through a first Newtonian liquid 7 whilst a back pressure is applied to the extruded metal through a second Newtonian liquid 17 by a second metal 19 displaced through a calibrated orifice 25. The invention may be used to produce a tube 23 of beryllium using a mandrel 13 on the extrusion ram 3 which carries a disc 11 for pressurizing the liquid 7. Both liquids 7, 17 are preferably lubricants. The second metal 19 may be copper, aluminium or lead and the discharge orifice 25 may be adjustable. The press has two pressure chambers 1, 15 which are pressed together by hydraulic jacks. Another embodiment is described, Fig. 1 (not shown), for extruding a rod.
