Abstract

In an incinerator for burning refuse on a continuously reciprocating grate GM, the combustion products pass around baffles 18a and 22, through a spray of water 34, then around ceramic pillars 28 in a gas scrubber G.S. to a plenum chamber 36, from where they are drawn upwardly by a fan 44 through a deflecting arch DA to impinge on the walls of a drying chamber DC where the water is separated before the gases are discharged to atmosphere, the water and the ash particles collected in the scrubber flowing down the sloping floor 24a thereof to a trough 108 and hence to a trough 112 containing a sludge conveyer SC, and the trough 112 leading to a sump 114 from which water is pumped to a manifold 30 for supplying the spray 34. Combustion air is supplied to the combustion chamber through nozzles 96 in the side walls and from a duct beneath the grate. The grate comprises perforated members (52) resting on grate carriers 54 which are supported by a framework of I-beams 56, 58 which is supported on stationary rollers 60 which are journalled on stationary brackets on a partition 62 and a pair of shoulders of the combustion chamber sidewalls. The framework also carries five rows of rollers 68 to support channels 66 secured at 70 to the front wall of the furnace so that the grate reciprocates beneath the channels which support inverted channels 72 having ratchet like projections 76 which assist in moving the charge along the grate. Reciprocations are imparted to the grate through a drive-shaft 82 having three pinions 80 which mesh with three racks 78 mounted on the framework. The front and rear portion of the grates have dead plates 138 replacing the members (52). The grate discharges onto an ash conveyer A.C. (Fig. 7) which comprises an endless travelling belt having blades to carry away the ash.
