A steam generator including an elongated hearth chamber having its walls lined internally with fluid-cooled tubes, means which produce a stream of hot gases to circulate on said fluid-cooled tubes, a gas outlet conduit in communication with an end of said hearth chamber for receiving said gases, and first and second heat absorption surfaces disposed in the gas stream exiting said chamber, at least a section of said chamber walls containing a plurality of first cooled tubes ; by circulating therethrough a relatively low enthalpy fluid, another wall section adjacent said first section comprising a plurality of second tubes cooled by circulating therethrough a first relatively high amount of enthalpy fluid, said second heat absorption surfaces, in the direction of gas flow, between said second tubes and said first heat absorbing surfaces, means for circulating a second amount of relatively high enthalpy fluid through said first absorption surfaces of heat in flow relation in parallel with the circulation of said first quantity through said second tubes, means for combining said first and second quantities of high enthalpy fluid after leaving said second tubes and said first absorption surfaces of heat, respectively, and means to circulating the combined quantities through said second heat absorbing surfaces, characterized by first and second valve means for controlling, respectively, the circulation of said first, and second amounts of relatively high enthalpy fluid.
