Abstract
Carbon black may be produced, by partial combustion and/or pyrolysis of a hydrocarbon feedstock, by introducing a first stream of a free oxygen-containing gas into the upstream end portion of a generally cylindrical first zone having a length greater than its diameter, introducing a stream of the feedstock into the first zone and into the free-oxygen-containing gas therein between the point of introduction of the free-oxygen-containing gas, and the downstream end of the first zone passing the mixture from the first zone to a second generally cylindrical zone having a diameter greater than its length and greater than the diameter of the first zone, the upstream end of the second zone being in open communication with, and axially aligned with the downstream end of the first zone introducing a second stream of gas containing free oxygen into the periphery of the second zone to establish a mass of gas around the mixture from the first zone feeding a fuel to the first and/or second zones, and burning the fuel passing the mixture from the second zone into a generally cylindrical third zone having a length greater than its diameter, and a diameter less than the diameter of the second zone and separating said carbon black from the gaseous effluent from said third zone, the free oxygen in the first stream constituting 15-70% by volume of the total oxygen contained in the two streams together. Fuel may be introduced into the first zone at a point between the introduction of oxygen-containing gas, and the introduction of feedstock and preferably radially outwards from the axis of the zone. The feedstock may be introduced into the first zone at a point spaced 0À5-1À7 times the diameter of the first zone from the downstream end. The stream of O2-containing gas may be introduced tangentially into the second zone. This stream may be a stream of hot combustion gases, obtained by burning fuel in a gas which provides an excess of O2. The second stream of gas containing O2, i.e. the stream introduced into the second zone-may be introduced by a combustion tunnel in open communication with the second zone. The fuel may be introduced into the gas stream at a point between a point inside the tunnel, not more than 2 tunnel diameters (T.D.), pref. 1-1 T.D., from the outlet, and a point outside the tunnel, but in the second zone, not more than 1 T.D., pref. 0À5 T.D., from the outlet, and ignited when so introduced. The oxygen-containing gas may be air. Apparatus suitable for the process is described herein, but claimed in Specification 1,177,757.
