Abstract
Novel compounds having the formul[mu] where R represents an alkyl radical, and X represents a hydrogen atom, a saturated or unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radical optionally containing an oxygen atom in the hydrocarbon chain, or an acyl group derived from an organic carboxylic acid are obtained by reacting a des-A-gon-9-en-5-one with a formylating agent to give a 10-hydroxymethylene - des - A - gon - 9(11) - en - 5 - one, reacting the latter with a dehydrogenating agent to form a 10-formyl-des-A-gona-9,11- dien-5-one, and selectively reducing the latter to form a 10-hydroxymethyl-des-A-gona-9,11- dien-5-one. Alternatively the 10-hydroxymethylene starting compound is obtained by condensing a 5-enamino-des-A-gona-5(10), 9(11)- diene with formylacetic mixed anhydride to give the corresponding iminium compound which is subjected to acid hydrolysis.
