A method for the production of a food product specially intended for feeding ruminants, comprising the operations of: mixing an edible material bearing starch, of which at least a part of the starch is gelatinizable, and a non-protein nitrogenous substance characterized by the property of being hydrolysable to ammonia by the belly bacteria, and subjecting the mixture to treatment conditions to effect at least the partial gelatinization of the starch of said material, and the substance being sufficiently chemically and physically stable to withstand said treatment conditions, without substantial effect on said property thereof being hydrolysable by said belly bacteria.
