Abstract
An arrangement for transferring samples through the wall 6 of a hot cell comprises a lock A having a casing 10 provided with a cover 12 and a door 14. The cover 12 is retained by bolts 16 and is removable by a handling device (not shown) within the hot cell. The door 14 is carried by guide pins 18 slidable in a shielding housing B supported on the wall 6. A tube 24 slidably mounted in the housing B has a bore 30 through which the samples may be transferred to a transit flask 66. A carriage 34 connected to a tube 39 may be moved from the position shown to a position within the housing B (Fig. 2, not shown), this housing receiving a receptacle 44 having five compartments 46 arranged in a row for receiving the samples. The receptacle 44 is connected to a rod 48, the rod and tube 39 being interconnected by a bayonet coupling 50 having five alternative positions permitting variation longitudinally in the relative positions of the rod and tube, whereby any selected one of the compartments 46 may be aligned with an aperture 40 in the floor of the carriage 34. The aperture 40 is normally closed by two bolts 52 slidable in the carriage and biased by springs 56. Operation.-The cover 12 is removed and the compartments 46 are filled with samples. The tube 39 and rod 48 are moved together so that the carriage 34 abuts the door. 14 and the latter together with the carriage are positioned in the housing B, the aperture 40 being in alignment with the bore 30. The transit flask 66 is raised to lift the tube 24 so that the top 26 of the tube engages the sloping surfaces 64 of the bolts 52 to move them apart and permit the sample in that compartment 46 to drop into the flask. Pegs 58 on the bolts 52 co-operate with grooves 62 in the receptacle 44 to prevent movement of the latter when the bolts are moved apart.
