Abstract

The response time of a commutator-type dynamo-electric machine is improved by providing an electrically conductive damping member in the air gap which reduces the armature reaction flux. The damping member comprises a copper plate 27 which is secured to the face of each of the salient main field poles 19 and has bars 28 at the edges to provide lowresistance paths for the eddy currents induced in the plate by a change in the armature reaction flux. Alternatively the damping member is in the form of a cylinder secured to the inner periphery of the stator poles, Fig. 3 (not shown).
