Abstract

6-Methyl-#8'9-ergolene-8-carboxylic acid is prepared by cultivating a mutant of the strain of Claviceps paspali Stevens et Hall NRRL 3080, prepared by irradiation with ultraviolet rays and/or X-rays and/or treatment with ethylene imine, in a nutrient medium and isolating the acid therefrom. Lysergic and isolysergic acid are obtained by isomerizing the above compound by treatment with a base followed by acidification.
