Abstract
Black Cr-containing coatings are electrodeposited on a conductive member, e.g. of Cu, Zn, Fe, steel or brass, as a cathode in an aqueous solution free of SO 4 -- ions and containing: CrO 3 e.g. 60 g/1 to saturation F- as catalyst e.g. 0À03 to 1 g/1 as HF, HBF 4 , H 2 SiF 6 or a water-soluble alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or ammonium salt thereof (or a reaction product of CrO 3 , sucrose and H 2 SiF 6 containing 25% Cr, 25% F and 16% Si) and as additive (1) an inorganic N-containing compound e.g. 0À35 to 3À5 g/1 N0 2 as HNO 3 , HNO 2 , alkali metal (Na), alkaline earth metal (Ca) or ammonium salt thereof, and/or (2) Cr+++ e.g. 1 to 25 g/1 preferably formed in solution by adding sucrose or H 2 O 2 D.C. is passed between the cathode and an anode e.g. of lead (alloy) at a C.D. of 30-1500 A.S.F. at 60-140 F. Ba++ ion may be added e.g. 5 to 20 g/1 BaCO 3 to ensure a SO 4 -- free solution. The member to be plated may be a brass panel having a conventional Cr-plated surface or a Ni strike plate. Cr+++ may also be obtained by "preelectrolysis" instead of use a reducing agent. Specifications 829,429 and 813,445 are referred to.
