Abstract
Primary monohydric alcohols containing more than 4 C atoms in the molecule and being in admixture with an impurity which comprises a diol containing a secondary hydroxyl group are purified by subjecting the diol to catalytic dehydration in the liquid phase preferably in the presence of a catalyst comprising an oxide of Al, Zr or Ti at a temperature of between 130 C. and 280 C. The unsaturated compounds so formed are then hydrogenated by any known process, preferably using a nickel catalyst at a temperature of between 110 C. and 130 C. and at a hydrogen pressure of 10-30 atmospheres. The examples describe the purification of C 12-14 , C 16-18 and C 8-18 alcohol cuts.
