Abstract

A heat exchanger tube is made by providing a helix of wire or strip 2 on a multi-layer strip 3 of steel and a copper layer on at least the exterior and heating the assembly to a temperature between the melting-point of copper and steel to braze the layers of the strip together and the wire or strip to the tube. The helix is closely wound and expanded along the tube by a sleeve 4 with a pair of pegs 5, 6 which separate the tuns as the sleeve rotates. The strip for the fin is also multi-layer with a steel core and a layer of copper on each side. The wire may be copper-coated and wetted with flux. Alternatively the wire is uncoated and the outer layer of the tube is made thicker. The helix may be wound directly on to the tube or on to a mandrel (not shown) whose diameter is greater than the tube. The strip or wire is fixed in a slot in the tube before axial expansion by the sleeve 4. The mandrel may be a frusto-conical sleeve rotated at the same speed as the tube during the axial feed of the tube therethrough. The heat exchanger may be zinc-plated after assembly.
