Abstract
The invention relates to isatin-N-alkane penicillins of Formula I in which R 1 and R 2 are the same or different and are H, F, Cl, Br, I, C 1-4 alkyl or C 1-4 alkoxy R3 is H or C 1 to C 4 alkyl and their salts with alkali metals or alkaline earth metals. The penicillins are prepared by reacting a reactive derivative of an isatin-N-alkane carboxylic acid of formula in which R 1 , R 2 and R 3 have the above meanings, with 6-aminopenicillanic acid or a salt thereof. The penicillin may be recovered in the acid or salt form. Typical compounds are 6 - [[alpha] - (isatin - N) - acetamido] - penicillanic acid, 6 - [[alpha] - (4 - chloroisatin - N) - acetamido]- penicillanic acid and 6-[[alpha]-(5,6-dimethylisatin- N) - acetamido] - penicillanic acid. The penicillins have slow release properties. A therapeutic composition comprises an isatin-N-alkane penicillin of Formula I or an alkali metal or an alkaline metal salt thereof, e.g. as an injection.
