Abstract
Apparatus used for transfusion comprises a gas-tight rigid casing 21, 22, compressible reservoir 23, 30 adapted to contain the substance to be transfused and mounted in the casing, an outlet 32 for connecting the reservoir to a catheter, a valve in the casing for introducing pressurized gas into the casing, so as to compress the reservoir and eject its contents, and an adjustable valve member 33 for regulating the outlet flow from the reservoir, there being a wire or thread 50 passing through and maintained in the opening of the valve member and extending into the interior of the reservoir for preventing adhesion of the walls of the reservoir at least in the proximity of the wire or thread. As shown, the casing is of a transparent material 22 within a' metal envelope 21 and flexible containers 23, 30 form the reservoir and contain physiological liquid and plasma respectively, the liquid and plasma being mixed and ejected through the outlet tube 32 from the apparatus by compressed air 26 introduced into the casing through a valve (not shown). The containers are initially separated by a membrane 31 which is ruptured by air pressure acting on the containers when an outlet valve 33 is first opened. A wire 50 may be arranged to extend into the containers to prevent the walls of the containers closing together completely and so preventing the plasma solution being ejected and this wire may be manipulated to cause the rupture of the membrane. The valve 33 (see also Figure 2, not shown) which controls the rate of ejection of the solution, comprises pincer jaws (39) arranged to clamp the ejection tube 32, the valve also including a pointer (38) which indicates the amount of transfusion time in hand. The metal envelope 21 may have a slit through which the containers can be observed. The reservoir may be of an elastic and transparent material.
