Abstract

A fluid pressure-operated power wrench is controlled by a valve having a manually depressible plunger which, when depressed, closes an outlet port of the valve. This allows pressure to build up both inside the valve housing and in a line connected to the tool operating means. The pressure build-up in the valve housing acts on the movable valve element in such a way as to bias it toward the outlet-port-open " release " condition. A wrench (not shown) powered by a rotary fluid motor has that motor controlled by a valve including a plunger 190, Fig. 12, which when depressed can fully close an outlet port 208 whilst leaving an inlet port 206 still partly open. The inlet port communicates with a chamber 160 to which a fluid inlet pipe 166, Fig. 11, and also a passageway 162 leading to the fluid motor are both open. The outlet port communicates with a chamber 164 connected to a fluid return pipe 168, so that the fluid flow normally by-passes the conduit leading to the motor. When the outlet port is closed by depression of the plunger the by-pass between the inlet and return pipes is interrupted and pressure is applied both to the fluid motor and to the base of the valve plunger itself. This ensures that the valve is pressure-biased toward the " release " position, so that a spring loading is unnecessary, and also acts as a safety mechanism since over-pressure caused by an excessive load on the tool will tend to displace the valve plunger upwardly.
