Abstract
A polymer is prepared by conducting a polymerization reaction in a liquid melt phase, uniformly dispersing throughout the molten polymer an inert gas or vapour, and maintaining the dispersion through the polymer while cooling it to form a friable solid polymer, comminuting the friable solid polymer and continuing the polymerization in the solid phase. The inert gas is any gas which is not ordinarily reactive with the polymer under conventional polymer melt process conditions. This includes non-reactive materials that are gaseous under ambient conditions (1 atmosphere and 25 C.), e.g. nitrogen, carbon dioxide, helium, argon, some hydrocarbons, and some halogenated hydrocarbons (having boiling points below the solidification temperature or melting point of the polymeric melts) as well as the non-reactive vapour of materials (such as certain of the halogenated hydrocarbons and hydrocarbons) that are not necessarily gaseous under ambient conditions but which become gaseous at elevated temperatures and/or reduced pressures. Mixtures of gases may be used. In the examples polyethylene terephthalate is made using dimethyl terephthalate, ethylene glycol, zinc acetate dihydrate and antimony trioxide.
