Abstract
In a hydraulic gear pump of the kind in which to provide a seal between the gear teeth tips and the housing to prevent back flow, the gear teeth tips are bedded into the housing adjacent the low pressure port, the housing, which is usually of a material, e.g., aluminium alloy, appreciably softer than the material, e.g., steel, of the gears, is made of material of much greater strength such as cast-iron or steel and provided with an insert or set of inserts separate from the housing, which for a small portion of the circumference surrounding each of the gears in a zone adjacent the low pressure port co-operates with the tips of the gear teeth to isolate the low pressure port from the high pressure port. An insert 23, Fig.3, of aluminium alloy is formed with arcuate flanks 24, 25 which co-operate with the gear teeth tips and with a recess formed in each of side plates 19, 20 which support the journals and abut the gears. The insert is convexedly curved at its back and at its ends supported in corresponding shaped recesses in the end walls 22 of the housing. The insert may be made integral with one of the side plates. At least one of the side plates on its face remote from the gears may be subjected to the pressure at the high pressure port to seal the side plates with respect to the end faces of the gears. When unduly worn the insert may be readily replaced.
