Abstract
Halopyrimidines are produced by reacting substituted acetonitriles of the formula R-CR 1 R 2 -C#N, wherein R is a hydrogen or halogen atom or a nitro, alkyl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, cyano, alkoxy, carboxylic acyl, carboxylic acyloxy, carbalkoxy, or alkyl- or aryl-sulphonyl group and each of R 1 and R 2 is a hydrogen or halogen atom, with isocyanide dichlorides of the formula R 3 -R 4 R 5 -N = CCl 2 , wherein R 3 is a hydrogen or halogen atom or an alkyl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aromatic heterocyclic group and each of R 4 and R 5 is a hydrogen or halogen atom, provided that at least two of the radicals R-R 5 represent halogen, the alkyl, aralkyl, aryl and hetero radicals being optionally substituted. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. ferric chloride, and/or an inert solvent or diluent.
