Abstract
Novel phenazine derivatives of the general formula where R1 represents lower alkyl or benzyl are prepared by (a) treating a phenazine N- monoxide of the formula where R1 is as defined above and R2 represents a lower alkyl or benzyl group with a halide of a Group III element and treating the resulting N-monoxide of the general formula with a hydroperoxide or (b) treating a 1,6- dialkoxy (or dibenzyloxy) phenazine N,N-dioxide with a halide of a Group III element and separating the product from the mixture obtained or (c) treating 1,6-phenazene diol-5,10- dioxide with an alkylating agent or a benzylating agent and separating the product from the mixture obtained. The N-monoxide and N,N-dwxide starting materials are obtained by treating the corresponding 1,6-dialkoxy (or dibenzyloxy) phenazine with a hydroperoxide and isolating the product from the mixture obtained. Pharmaceutical compositions comprising compounds of Formula I or an N,N-dioxide in which neither R1 nor R2 is hydrogen, together with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier, are administered orally or parenterally or have germicidal and broad-spectrum anti-biotic activity.
