Abstract

Liquid, e,g. sea water, is evaporated in a series of evaporator stages lf . . . 1a by means of a countercurrent stream of air (or other gaseous vehicle) circulated through the apparatus by fan 4, and a mixture of vapour and air is withdrawn from each stage and led separately through valves 14a ... 14f to a multi-stage heat exchanger 2a . . . 2f where the vapour condenses. The condensate (desalinated water) is withdrawn from the heat exchanger by pump 7, and discharged from the system via preheater 9. Sea water is fed by pump 6 through preheaters 9, 8, through the coil traversing the heat exchanger 2, and through heater 3 and the heated water is then introduced into the first evaporator stage 1f. Part of the brine withdrawn from the last evaporator stage la is pumped back to the coil of heat exchanger 2, and the remainder is discharged from the system through preheater 8. The temperature of the sea water flowing from preheater 8 to heat exchanger 2 is controlled by thermostat 12. The temperature of the brine flowing between the evaporator stages is controlled by thermostats 15f . . . l5b. The process is preferably operated so that the difference between the temperature and/or specific enthalpy of the liquid and that of the air is maintained lower in the first evaporator stage than the last. An apparatus is described in which the evaporator stages and the heatexchanger are disposed in a common housing.
