Abstract

A heating and ventilating unit for an automobile comprises a casing 10 having a heat exchanger 11, a by-pass passage 12 and/or 13 controlled by a flap 19 and/or 21 and an air mixing chamber 15a with air outlets 23, 26, 68, the flap 19 and/or 20 in its open position directing air from the passage 12 and/or 13 transversely across the outlet face of the heat exchanger 11. The passages 12, 13 and outlets 23, 26 are elongated in the direction of the pivot axes of flaps 19, 21. Outlets 23, 26 communicate with the windscreen and the body of the vehicle respectively. The flaps 19, 21, flaps 24, 27 which control outlets 23, 26 respectively, and a water cock 33 for the heat exchanger 11 are controlled by Bowden cable and linkage mechanisms which are operated by levers arranged on a section of the vehicle dashboard which is secured to casing 10. A rheostat controlling a fan 17 is also operated by a lever on the dashboard section. The flaps 19, 21 and cock 33 are simultaneously operated, but one of the flaps 19, 21 may be opened before the other. The outlet 68 may be connected to the rear of the vehicle. The casing 10 may be positioned with the outlets 23, 26 vertical rather than, as shown, horizontal.
