Abstract
In a method of maintaining constant the paths of ion beams in a mass spectrometer or in a mass separator, e.g. for separating uranium isotopes, despite fluctuations in the supplies of the magnetic field and of the acceleration voltage, an ion beam which is not utilized in the analysis or separation is collected across the slit of a control collector and the difference in the ion currents received on the two lips of the slit which are insulated from each other is measured and utilized to control the acceleration voltage or the intensity of the magnetic field to cancel the difference in the ion currents. The ion currents are supplied to a differential amplifier to derive an error voltage representing the unbalance of the ion currents. As shown in Fig. 5 the voltages derived from resistors 22, 221 by the ion currents received at 11, 111 are supplied to differential amplifiers 24, 25, the negative inputs of which provide a variable negative feedback serving to balance the gains to that the output voltage E is zero in respect of nominal values of the accelerating voltage and the magnetic field. By measuring the voltage E at 26 this voltage can be set to zero. The voltage E is applied to a dissymmetrical amplifier 29 to provide a voltage E1 with respect to ground. The voltage E1 is then applied to the base of an N-P-N type transistor 30 which operates as a variable resistor in the regulating chain 31 of the voltage supply 35. The voltage at the point O which is therefore dependent on the error voltage E drives the amplifier 34 which regulates the supply 35. Transistorized or vacuum tube amplifiers may be used. The slit control collector assembly comprises, Fig. 3, a stack of metallic and mica strips 8-13 mounted on a carriage 15 which can be adjusted in position along guides 16 by means of a rod and fork mechanism 17, 18. The stack comprises, in order, a stainless steel diaphragm 8 provided with a slit, a mica strip 9 pierced by a rectangular opening, an identical mica strip 10 in which are set two copper strips 11, (111) forming the lips of the collector slit, a further mica strip 12 with a rectangular opening and a copper strip 13 which is connected to ground.
