Abstract
An electric motor pump unit used in a central heating system has a sealed stator assembly co-operating with a rotor 10 mounted at one end of a hollow shaft 9 supported in a bearing 8 in a support plate 7 and carrying at its other end pump impeller 12, wherein a check valve 20 is provided within the hollow shaft so that the stator can be removed without draining the system. The stator assembly includes a wound core 1 secured between end plates 2, 3 and secured to the pump body by screws 19. A jacket 5 encloses the rotor and is sealed to end plate 2 and support plate 7 by seal 6. Hollow shaft 9 is supported in bearing 8 housed in support plate 7 and a thrust bearing 11 is provided between rotor 10 and bearing 8. Pump impeller 12 is mounted on end 9a of the hollow shaft and the pump chamber is closed by casing 13 which is secured by screws 17 to plate 7 and sealed by resilient ring 14. When the stator assembly is removed water pressure causes impeller 12 to be pressed against bearing 8 and valve 20 to close so leakage is minimized and rotor 10 is made accessible. In operation, the provision of back blades 12a on impeller 12 relieves the pressure on thrust bearing 11. The pump delivery is regulated by inserting shims 15 between casing 13 and support plate 7 thereby altering the volume of the pumping chamber.
