Abstract
Coatings having excellent "metallic glamour", which are particularly suitable as automobile finishes, are obtained with metallic pigmented organosol coating compositions comprising a dispersion of a polymer of one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers and metallic pigment in an organic liquid comprising a non-solvent for the dispersed phase and a coalescing solvent (i.e. a solvent for the polymer which is miscible with the non-solvent) for the polymeric dispersion, the non-solvent having a boiling point lower than that of the coalescing solvent. Polymers exemplified are polymethyl methacrylate and a methyl methacrylate/diethylamino ethyl methacrylate copolymer. Pigments specified are flakes of Al, Ni, Sn, Ag, Cr, stainless steel, Au and Cu. Suitable as the non-solvent are acrylic, alicyclic or aromatic hydrocarbons, e.g. hexane, alcohols, esters, acids, ketones, amides and sulphoxides suitable as coalescing solvents are ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, diethylene glycol monobutyl ether acetate, ethylene glycol monobutyl ether acetate, 2, 2, 4-trimethyl pentane-1, 3-diol monoisobutyrate monoacetate, diethylene glycol monobutyl ether, ethylene glycol mono ethyl ether acetate and acetone. The compositions may also include a plasticiser, e.g. isooctyl benzyl phthalate. The coatings are preferably formed by spraying the compositions on to a substrate and evaporating the non-solvent. In Examples, the compositions are sprayed on metal panels and the coatings are baked at 150 C.
