Abstract

The subject-matter of this Specification is substantially the same as that described in Specification 1,189,091, the carrier catalyst being one containing one or more palladium compounds. A preferred catalyst contains palladium in the form of a palladium compound, e.g. PdO, Pd (CH 3 COO) 2 , gold and alkali or alkaline-earth metal carboxylates. Examples describe the preparation of vinyl acetate and vinyl propionate both by the addition of acetaldehyde initially and by the addition of water, hydrolysis of a portion of the ester to the aldehyde and corresponding oxidation of the aldehyde to the acid.
