Abstract

Substrates are coated with a water-dilutable salt of a copolymer formed by reacting an ester of an unsaturated fatty acid having at least 12 carbon atoms in the carbon chain containing the unsaturation with maleic acid or anhydride in a proportion by weight of the acid or anhydride in the range 5 to 25% in relation to the total weight of ester and acid or anhydride and copolymerising the ester/acid or anhydride reaction product (1 ) thus formed with one or more unsaturated monomers (2) and (3) acrylonitrile and/or methacrylonitrile, wherein the proportion by weight charged to the reaction mixture of the product (1) to the total weight of (1), (2) and (3) is in the range 50 to 90% and that of the nitrile (3) charged to the total weight of (2) and (31 is in the range 5 to 75%. In the Examples the substrates coated are glass, aluminium and wood.
