Abstract
In a heavy water moderated and cooled nuclear reactor, the core is mounted within a metal tank having a flexible wall. The space surrounding the metal tank is filled with light water and the tank is not subjected to a pressure, as pressure equalization is effected by the flexible wall and the adjustment of light water pressure. The fuel channels 16, mounted in a heavy water moderator, are cooled by heavy water which vaporizes in chamber 20, which with lower chamber 13 forms the metal tank 12. The prestressed concrete vessel 1 surrounds 12 and the intermediate space 14 is filled with light water. Tank 12 is supported on levers 36 and pillars 34. The upper end of each lever is rigidly fixed to chamber 20, above the flexible part 22, while the lower ends of all the levers except one rest on knuckle bearings 38 supported on 34. Pressure equalization vessels 46, having flexible diaphragms 48, are connected to the space 14 and chamber 13. An excessive pressure rise in 20 opens nozzles 52 which discharge heavy water vapour to the condensing tank 54. The frangible disc 64 also releases steam to the pool 62.
