Abstract

Edgewise insertion of a cassette 3 causes a plate 2 to move with the cassette and towards it so that capstans 10, 101 and spindles 6, 7 enter the cassette, generally as described in Specification 1,080,082, and a pin 15 carried by the plate 2 moves, through levers 23, 25, 26, a slider 36 to the position shown in Fig. 1A in which capstan 10, spindle 6, and pinch roller 11, Fig. 1, are operative and the tape 4 is driven in the first direction F when cessation of tape movement is detected by a device 76, which may be of the kind described in Specification 1,122,041, a solenoid 32 is briefly energized to release the lever 23 from the retaining action of pin 15 so that a spring 54 urges the slider 36 to its opposite extreme position (Figs. 2 and 2A) in which capstan 101, spindle 7, and pinch roller 111 are operative and the tape 4 is driven in the reverse direction (F1). A switching array 68, Fig. 1, brings into circuit the relevant playback head for each direction of tape movement and a corresponding indicator lamp (70, 701, Figs. 1B and 2B). At the end of playback in the reverse direction, a second energization of solenoid 32 causes a stud 29 on lever 23 to engage a lug 21 and withdraw latch 17 from pin 15, releasing plate 2 which ejects the cassette 3. Manual switches (74, 81) enable the user to cause ejection of the cassette after playback in only one direction or to act directly on the solenoid 32 in order to reverse the tape or eject the cassette at any time.
