Abstract
A running multifilament bundle is formed into yarn by moving it laterally into and out of contact with a lateral interlacing, and perhaps heating, jet of fluid e.g. air, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, steam or water, the frequency and direction of the contact of the filaments and jet being such as to cause continuous interlacing of the yarn and the tension of the bundle being such as to prevent formation of crunodal loops in the filaments, although the tension may be abruptly intermittently relaxed in synchronism with the bundle making contact with the jet. In a converted ring-or capspinning machine, a running bundle, passing through a combined tubular guide and jet apparatus (located on the axis of a yarncollecting bobbin) to a ring-traveller or lower edge of a cap, generates a balloon which is deflected, say once in each cycle, by a projecting edge of a deflector plate inwardly of the balloon and released when a segment thereof is in the path of the jet.
