Abstract

An arc-chute 1 contains a movable contact 6 a fixed contact 15 with an arc runner 16 a plurality of arc-splitter plates 20 and a U-shaped ferromagnetic member 17 having a base portion 17a and two arms 17b which together surround the moving contact 5 throughout its travel, and a pair of extensions 17c extending from the free ends of arms 17b towards the base 17a and lying alongside the fixed contact 15. The arrangement is such that any arc forming away from the centre of the chute roots on the arms 17b, 17c, the current flowing in member 17 along a path 27, thus creating a magnetic field tending to drive the arc towards the base 17a and thus towards the splitter plates 20 where it is extinguished. The contact 5 is carried by a bridge 4 held resiliently in a carrier 3 by a spring 8. A second chute surrounds the other end of bridging contact 4 which is provided with arcing tips 22. In a modification, the ends of extensions 17c may be bent to follow the shape of base 17a (Fig. 5b, not shown). The base 17a may be interrupted.
