Abstract

An open chamber breech mechanism for firing caseless ammunition 12 comprises a carrier member 18 having a firing chamber opening laterally through the surface thereof and being mounted for rotation in a frame member 14 which has an ammunition infeed opening, the carrier member 18 rotating between a cartridge infeed position and a firing position. Obturator means 42 are provided for sealing those interfaces between the members 14, 18 which, in use, are subjected to propellent gas pressure during firing of a round. In the construction shown the obturator means 42 comprise an upper obturator attached to the frame member 14 and sealing around the margins of the firing chamber through sealing means 80, 82 (78, Fig. 2, not shown), the sealing means being urged against the carrier member by the explosion gases. The obturator means 42 further comprise an annular flange 94 on the forward face of the carrier member 18. The firing means 40 is sealed by a flange 102 thereof abutting the rear wall of a chamber 104 containing the firing means. The carrier member 18 is provided with a pair of bearing surfaces 50 which terminate in stop surfaces (52, Fig. 3, not shown) so that the carrier member is mounted for limited oscillation. The rotational axis of the carrier member is eccentric so that the member tends to move away from the upper obturator on movement from the firing position to the infeed position. In a further embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) the breech mechanism is of the recoilless type. When cylindrical rounds of ammunition are used a pivoted plate is provided in the upper obturator which plate co-operates with the carrier member to form a chamber for the projectile (Figs. 5, 6, not shown). The obturator means may be housed in grooves in the carrier member flexible or pivoted walls separating the means from the pressurized gas so that, in use, the means are compressed in the grooves and thereby urged against the frame member (Figs. 7 to 10, not shown). The ammunition shown in Fig. 1 has an equilateral curvilinear triangular shape in transverse cross-section and the projectile 30 is embedded in the charge 110.
