Abstract
A continuous steaming and ironing machine for knitted fabric pieces comprises two, opposed endless circulating belts 3, 7 for feeding the pieces to be ironed a spreading-out roll 4 for uncurling the lateral edges of each fabric piece, the roll 4 being located at the engagement gap 20 of the belts 3, 7 and rotating in a direction opposite to the direction of feeding motion of the fabric pieces and an end edge-uncurling roll 5 associated with the gap 21 between the roll 4 and the belt 3 and which is displaceable relatively to the roll 4. Each fabric piece is pre-steamed in a zone 1 to increase its flexibility and its leading smooth edge is introduced between the belt 3 and the roll 4 which is provided with opposite saw-tooth threads to uncurl the lateral edges of the piece. The roll 5, which is knurled and is mounted on a carriage 5a which has previously been withdrawn, is advanced as soon as the leading edge is gripped between the belt 3 and the roll 4. A resiliently-mounted plate 6 urges the belt 3 towards the roll 4. The upper belt 7, passing around an edge 8 having a nose-shaped profile, prevents re-curling of the edges of the piece as it passes below a hood 9 into a zone in which it is steamed, smoothed and set by steam passing upwardly from a trough 10 into a thermostatically controlled super heating device 11. Excess steam is sucked out by a fan 12. Each fabric piece passes beneath an electricallyheated thermostatically-controlled roll 13 comprising a covered smoothing roll or a polished roll to impart a lustre to the fabric piece which is subsequently cooled by air sucked through an extractor 15 by a fan 14.
