Abstract

A device for filling containers is characterized in that it comprises a chamber 11 which has an opening 13 through which only the neck of a bottle is passed, the chamber being in communication with a supply of sterilizing gas to maintain fully aseptic conditions for the filling operation. A fixed plate 2 supports a chamber 11 supplied with steam via conduits 12. A dipper nozzle 3 rigid with feed valve 4 enters the bottle 1, whereupon the cap 15 engages rack 1a and slides relative to nozzle 3 to engage valve 4. The latter slides into the chamber 11 and upon engaging cap 15 initiates the movement of piston 5 to allow fluid access from source 7 to the bottle. The movement of piston 5 may be controlled by an electric, pneumatic or hydraulic motor. Cold water is circulated in ducts 14 to form a heat shield. Additional heating means, e.g. electric heating elements, may be associated with chamber 11. A duct 17 is connected to a vacuum pump so that the bottle 1 may be vacuumized to accelerate the filling operation. Additional operations may be carried out in the sterile atmosphere, e.g. softening the bottle necks and heat welding or sealing the necks.
