Abstract

An electrolytic cell for producing metal alkyls, e.g. of Pb, Mg, Al, Sn, Sb or Bi, particularly tetraethyl lead using a complex organo - Al electrolyte, comprises at least two disc cathodes 2, e. g. rotating on a shaft 3 and wetted with Hg, which are arranged vertically, and at least one metal sheet (e.g. Pb strips) anode 1, which is introduced into the electrolyte between the cathodes during electrolysis as it dissolves. The or each anode may be supported and prevented from touching the Hg surface by a partition 6. Inflatable elastic bodies (8, Figs. 3 and 4), e. g. of rubber filled with gas or oil and protected with films of P. T. F. E. or polypropylene or similar polymers, may hold the or each anode in position in the cell and in electrical contact with interposed Cu plates (7), and release the anode when further advancing into the electrolyte, e.g. fed from a roll of strip or under gravity. Air may be excluded from the cell into which the or each anode is guided through one or more elastic seals in a shaft above the cell. New sheet anode material may be joined to that in the electrolyte by dovetailing or welding.
