Abstract

Apparatus for guiding a travelling belt comprises a thin sheet which is as wide as the belt, presenting a contoured, longitudinally extending guide surface to the belt, a plurality of transversely extending bars in longitudinal succession acting on the surface of the sheet opposite to its guiding surface, each bar having adjustment means urging it against the sheet to selectively alter the shape of the guidesurface. The adjustment means may comprise a transversely-spaced pair of rods connected to the ends of each bar and to a transverse backing support, each of the rods being axially-expandable, and each backing support may be movable to adjust both ends simultaneously. In a paper-making machine, this apparatus may be used to guide one of a pair of forming wires to give a zone which is narrow, and convergent. The sheet and the adjustable means may be carried in a housing which is swingable about a point remote from the sheet for limited adjustment of the sheet as a whole. In use, "incipient webs" are said to form on each wire, and these then become a single web as the convergence is traversed.
