Abstract

A manipulator 1 for transferring fuel elements between the core of a reactor, e.g. a sodium cooled reactor, and a store adjacent the core, is supported by an oblong plug 2 in a rotatable plug 3 forming part of the reactor enclosure. The manipulator comprises a main tube 7 supported by a shoulder 9 engaging a bearing 10, the tube being rotatable by a motor gear unit 49 having a pinion 47 engaging a toothed ring 46. A tube 14 axially movable within the tube 7 supports at its lower end an L-shaped housing 15, this housing extending through a slot 18 in the tube 7 and carrying at its end the casing 26 of a grab 6. The grab jaws 27 are operated by a bar 22 pivoted at 23 and connected at 21 to a rod 19 axially movable within the tube 14. The top end 20 of the rod 19 is connectible to the actuating rod 88 of a jack 87 supported by a plate 84 suspended on the cable 83 of a winch 81. Thus actuation of the jack 87 operates the jaws 27. The tube 14 is supported at its upper end by jaws 85, 86 pivoted on the plate 84 whereby operation of the winch 81 causes the grab 6 to move vertically relative to the core for withdrawing or inserting fuel elements, the grab and fuel elements being guided by a tubular projection 38 connected to the main tube 7 through struts 39. When the manipulator is not required for use the tube 14 and rod 19 may be disconnected from their lifting elements 84. 88 and the winch 81 may lift these elements into a shaft 78, a door 77 then being moved to the horizontal closed position. Should a fuel element become jammed during its lifting operation from the core the main tube 7 and all the associated parts are raised by the hook of a travelling crane engaging a lifting ring 79.
