Abstract
In a guide housing for air entraining dust or fibres and of the kind in which the air moves in a vortex and is discharged with the dust or fibres through a tangential outflow passage, the passage extends in a direction opposed to that of the vortex. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a vortex separator comprises a housing 12 having at its top a vortex-generating volute 14 for the inflow of dust or fibre-contaminated air. The major portion of the air is discharged through a filter 20 and a clean air tangential outlet pipe 16. The contaminants and a minor portion of the air pass into a spiral-shaped guide housing 24 having a tangential outlet pipe 26 which the air and contaminants enter after a sharp deflection in a direction opposite to that of the vortex. Fans 19, 21 are mounted in the pipes 16, 26. In a modification, Figures 3 and 4 (not shown) the contaminated air enters the housing axially through vortex-producing vanes and the clean air is dsicharged through an axial outlet surmounted by a conically-shaped filter and extending centrally through the spiral-shaped guide housing.
