Abstract

Material to be charged to a blast furnace, on its way from lock chambers 10, 11 to a distributing bell 27 of the type disclosed in Specification 1,256,424, passes through a rotary distributing funnel 6. The drive transmission 14, 15 for the funnel 6 is contained within a stationary housing 5 to which cleaned cooled blast furnace gas is admitted through openings 21, 22 to prevent the corrosive hot gas from the furnace top from leaking into it. Gas seals 19, 23 also help to prevent such leakage. A slidable apertured sealing plate 33 is mounted between the furnace top 8 and a flanged expansion allowing bellows 9, which gas tightly connects the furnace top 8 to the housing 5, to close off the furnace top when necessary for repair of the rotary funnel 6.
